Open Resource

Open Resource is a free service which provides an opportunity for individuals to visit the Center with questions on all aspects of computer based assistive technology (AT).

Open Resource is often a first step for people with disabilities to learn about potential assistive technology solutions. Although assistive technology is much more common now than when we first opened our doors, it is still difficult to find. None of the large computer stores carry AT hardware or software and sales clerks have very little knowledge of this specialized area.

Our Open Resource program allows people (often on limited incomes) to come to our lab and try out the hardware and software that will help them succeed in school and the workforce. Open Resource is not an assessment, and no AT recommendations are made - but it is a way of seeing some possibilities, a place to begin the exploration of assistive technology solutions.

There are many assistive technologies available, and finding the right one can be overwhelming. Giving people a chance to try the equipment before they buy it, as well as having the opportunity to discuss options with our AT Specialists, has made Open Resource the single most popular program the Center has developed, an opportunity for hands-on trials of various AT solutions. There is no charge for an Open Resource appointment.
