Better Access for Library Patrons

The Center for Accessible Technology works with libraries to develop Assistive Technology plans that meet the needs of both patrons and library staff.

We provide recommendations to meet computer input and output needs, as well as suggestions for facilitating training, documentation, and support. Our work is distinguished by our commitment to work with each library to find the most appropriate solution for their particular needs. We have extensive experience creating solutions for individuals who have multiple disabilities and unique requirements.

Staff members who work with libraries have both an up-to-date knowledge of available access options and an appreciation of the individual library’s concerns. As part of the consultation process, we provide the library with clear, comprehensive information addressing all relevant issues. We work interactively with the library, and always encourage library staff to contact us at any point with questions.

CforAT staff members have:

  • Provided direct consultation to libraries, including Berkeley Public Library, Dublin Public Library, and Cerritos Public Library
  • Provided statewide trainings on the topics “Accessible Electronic Services for People with Disabilities” and “Designing Accessible Websites”
  • Developed checklists and other widely-disseminated materials on electronic accessibility in libraries
  • Written articles on library accessibility for Library Hi-Tech News and JASIS and given accessibility presentations at ALA

Staff credentials include one team member with a degree in Library Science and another who holds the RESNA Assistive Technology Provider certification.
