Website Accessibility Expert

We’re looking for an experienced Accessibility Expert to work with us on a freelance basis. The ideal candidate has an in-depth knowledge of HTML, CSS and the concepts of web accessibility/usability; knowledge of JavaScript and AJAX; and familiarity with the range of assistive technology available to people with disabilities. You have excellent communication skills, are able to deliver practical accessibility and usability information to a wide range of clients and are able to work in a rapidly changing environment with minimal supervision.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Working on a freelance basis, you will undertake web and software accessibility and usability audits, providing in-depth consulting on web/mobile websites and applications, wireframes, designs and software, by carrying out a combination of code reviews and testing with assistive technologies. Job tasks will include:

Working on audits, accessibility user testing, training, design, and development of materials.

Proactively identifying ways of improving our products and services.

Present training sessions and offer in-depth consulting to organizations on web accessibility and usability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in developing proposals/bids, determining scope, and scheduling of audits.

Test IT systems using manual and assistive technology tools.

Conduct Web accessibility audits of pre and post-production Web sites and IT systems using automated testing software and hand review protocols.

Create Accessibility audit reports for clients demonstrating accessibility barriers and providing clear technical solutions to bring pages into compliance.

Deliver testing results to the client, schedule/participate in conference calls, follow-up discussions, email to support the client in remediating their products.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Excellent understanding of HTML, CSS, AJAX and JavaScript design/syntax.
  • Experience with accessible web design, solid knowledge of section 508, W3C standards.
  • Experience testing web-based interfaces for accessibility/usability.
  • Experience with accessible PDF documents.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team. Have good presentation skills.
  • Experience working with Non-profit organizations and people with disabilities.
  • Ability to work with wide variety of audiences, able to communicate well virtually and in person.
Location

We are based in Berkeley, California at the Ed Roberts Campus, a universally designed, transit oriented facility designed to be usable by people with a broad range of disabilities. CforAT promotes the concepts of the independent living movement for people with disabilities, and people with disabilities are in leadership roles within the organization. We work remotely with the majority of our clients. As a result, employment for people not in the Berkeley area is possible, as telecommuting is definitely possible for all aspects of this position.
